The response to the new helmet 'law' has been very entertaining. If you're doing any amount of speed on a bike, you would be wise to wear a helmet. Head injuries can be the end of all things if you crash.

However, everyone is talking about how the locals in Japan are not complying with the new law (started April 1st, 2023) by our fearless politicians in Kasumigaseki (Tokyo). Yet people are still giving in to the peer pressure to wear meaningless masks outdoors, on trains, and even around people they don't know. (Most the time, the most diligent 'maskers' were the first ones that got sick during WuFlu).

As cyclist, wearing a helmet is really a must. However, making it a law seems pretty nonsensical. Why? If you're riding a short distance at a slow speed, you are probably not going to have an issue unless... you're 150 years old and fall off your bike.

Japan is famous for keeping rules, even if they have meaning. People challenge themselves to think about the "what if" situations better. Conversely, we don't need politicians trying to dictate common sense... well, maybe until they have some themselves and they are all limited to 6-8 years in office max. 😉 Overall, it's best to focus on RULES WITH REASON.

Kindness is the most underrated skill in business.

If you're in sales and keen to turn off your potential customers from listening, there's a way. You can turn off those possible new clients lickety-split. How? Send them a link to your online scheduling service.

We get it. The technical and expediency of using these services seems great. However, telling a customer to look at your schedule is ignorance before daylight. Don't do it! As business professionals will take you telling them to do something as pompous or condescending.

If you're trying to sell something and want someone's time, it's best to-

• suggest a couple dates with
• maybe an afternoon and a morning slot.

They're sharing their precious time with you so show them that you are willing to make an effort to find time that works for them, not just you. Otherwise, your emails or chats will likely end up at the bottom of their mailbox chat.

Recently saw a person broadcast a message on media. When others questioned her on the facts, she ran back to her little media silo (where you get only one sided views on whatever issue you're interested in) replying to others but saying she didn't want to hear back. Hmmm.

In order to have a free and just society, we must listen to the perspectives of others. That doesn't mean we have to accept everything everyone says. If you're going to quote 'the experts', I am going to ask you who those experts are, and what their experience is. If you can't be questioned, then you're running in the direction of Joseph Stalin.

Always remember to look at both sides of the issue. Your nation will last longer with thinkers than suppressors.

Recently visited some friends in the US. We visited the mountains and took the ski lifts to the top saw a garbage can with two whole. One for 'recycle' and one for 'landfill'... The whole ESG, sustainability thing seems a bit cult-ish, but that doesn't mean we should be poor stewards with our environment.

One thing that always seems strange around the world is landfills. Why do people dig huge holes (landfills) and bury what they don't 'recycle' in the ground?

In Japan, even many of the small cities have high-powered incinerators to burn up everything that can't be recycled. After seeing this for decades, it is really hard to imagine burying your trash.

The garbage can next to the mountain ski lift spurred me to think... maybe it's time for people to rethink landfills. Either burn it up, or recycle it if it doesn't burn.

The Japan model seems to work well. It would be nice to see landfills eliminated. Our first family house was literally taken over by a dump that spread from behind the property overtaking the lush green pastures, and eventually overwhelming the house situated on that country road. The whole property is an now ugly landfill.

In the end, we're supposed to be getting a new heaven and new earth... but for now it's a good time to take a bit better care of the earth while we're here.
